Avi Sic is a rising star in the Electronic Dance music world, known for her energetic and hard-hitting style that has captured the attention of industry heavyweights like Fedde Le Grand, Calvin Harris, and Diplo. Her collaborations with artists like Valy Mo, showcase her bold and distinct signature sound, as seen in their collaboration ‘In Your Face’, and recently on their new release ‘The Music.’ With intense rhythms and hypnotic vocal lines, Avi Sic & Valy Mo’s latest track is filled with infectious energy that captures listeners from start; this time, we sat down with Avi Sic to discuss the behind the scenes process of ‘The Music.’
Hi Avi, it is a pleasure to meet you! How’s it going? Congrats on the release of ‘The Music’!
Happy to be here! And thank you, I’m so excited this track is finally out for all to hear.
To begin, can you tell us more about the inspiration and concept behind this track?
The idea was to create something hard-hitting, but also anthemic in nature. The lyrics are a hypnotic build, until the drop slaps you in the face and takes over. The result is an intense, high energy Tech House track that could also be considered Big Room or played at festivals. Currently, the track is #2 on the Beatport Hype Chart (Mainstage) and also inching closer to the Top 50 Mainstage Chart which is also very exciting. It also broke onto the Newcomer Chart on 1001 Tracklists at #27, which is a first for me.
You’ve collaborated with Valy Mo in the past, can you share more details of how this collaboration came about this time?
We released our first collaboration together, exactly a year ago on Showtek’s label, SKINK. Because of its success, we were excited to get a second idea going. Because we live on opposite sides of the world – everything is done by passing the project file back and forth. I sent him an idea I was working on, that needed finishing, and he was loving it. He put the vocal together and we worked on a few other compositional changes, and we knew right away that we had another banger in our hands. Curbi greenlighted the track for release on his label, ‘Seeing Is Believing’ which is a part of Warner Music Group. I’m a huge fan of his, so we definitely found the perfect home for it.
What elements in this track would you say defines your sound?
The synth elements for sure. As I’m evolving as an artist, my synth work has become the stand out element in my work. I’ve really taken the time to improve my serum abilities and skill. The drum work and sound design comes in at a close second. Overall, my music has a darker vibe, but I am able to juxtapose that with a kind of care-free, silly, and fun aesthetic. My goal is always to have fun in the studio, and create an end product that carries those qualities onto the dancefloor.
How does this track compare or differ from your previous releases?
Hard to make comparisons because growth plays a big role in that. I will say that this is one of my favorite tracks to date as far as raw energy goes. It definitely has my signature hard-hitting sound. The synth carries the drop, but the vocal during the builds creates the energy. It’s almost a ballroom-type vocal – the end result is something very unique that I’m proud of.
Can you walk us through your process for layering this track? Were there new instruments or sounds added to this track that aren’t used in any of your other ones?
It’s all new, I never use the same sounds really. Even my kicks differ from track to track. I use a similar style of gating my synths, but the sounds are always new. I spend countless hours auditioning new sounds, until I find the right fit. It can be tedious work, but I enjoy it. That’s why I almost always write in midi, rather than using loops. It’s much easier to swap sounds, and see what works.
Was there something new you learned or a takeaway from producing this track, that you’d like to share with starting producers?
Vocal work is very important – it can make or break a track. With the addition of the vocals that Valy added, the song came together in the best way.
Do you have future plans to perform this track live together with Valy Mo at an upcoming event?
Never say never! Maybe, at this year’s Amsterdam Dance Event. So far, it’s awesome to see support from some of my favorite artists, such as Fedde Le Grand, Bingo Players, Laidback Luke and many more.
Who would be a dream artist to collaborate with or perform together in the future?
Noizu, Meduza, Chris Lake…There are so many artists I would love to tap in with and learn from.
Do you anticipate any upcoming releases later this year?
Of course! My next release is on March 22nd, on Don Diablo’s label Generation Hex. Hexagon was a goal label of mine, so I’m very excited to join the team over there.
