In this behind-the-scenes look at ‘The Sound of Music,’ we sit down with Freekbass to explore the creative journey of his latest track, a vibrant collaboration with UK-based Producer Jay Caruso. With an approach that continues to give way to fresh-sounding productions, Freekbass keeps working to expand on his passion for music and experimentation, putting forward tracks that highlight his unique fusion of Funk and Electronic Music. So, we’re looking forward to diving deeper into his creative mind as Freekbass reveals his approach to balancing musical styles, the inspiration behind his groove-heavy basslines, and his dedication to capturing and maintaining energy in his recordings.

Hi Freekbass, how are you?

Good and busy… which is good!

To begin, tell us, how did the collaboration with Jay Caruso come about for ‘The Sound of Music’?

My management/PR team (MCPR) connected the dots between Jay and me.

Can you walk us through the production process of ‘The Sound of Music’? How did the track evolve?

Jay brought the song to me and asked what I could add to it. I ended up playing bass guitar, vocoder, rhythm guitars, and TalkBox on the track. Once I recorded all my parts in my studio, I sent it back to Jay to mix and produce.

What elements of your signature sound did you work to emphasize in this track?

My bass guitar work is what I’m most known for and what folks will probably recognize first. But I’m particularly happy with the rhythm guitar parts I added, which I incorporate a lot in my solo work.

Jay Caruso is known for his Soulful House sound. How did you balance both of your musical styles in this collaboration?

Jay’s sound and mine work together like peanut butter and jelly. Growing up in Ohio, Funk and Disco were such staples in the local music scene, so this style of music is practically in my DNA. Many of Jay’s musical reference points are also similar to mine.

You are known for blending live instrumentation with electronic elements. How did you approach this in ‘The Sound of Music’?

As I mentioned earlier, I played bass, vocoder/keys, rhythm guitar, and TalkBox on the track. Both the bass and guitar tracks were recorded in single takes without cutting and pasting, to keep that live, energetic feeling.

Did you experiment with any new techniques or equipment during the production of this track?

Ernie Ball/MusicMan had just sent me a custom bass guitar right when I started recording, so I was able to get that classic StingRay tone on the track.

How did you approach composing the groove-heavy basslines that drive the energy of ‘The Sound of Music’?

Once I got a good rough take and had the line dialled in, I recorded it as one complete take, with no cutting or pasting. This approach keeps the track breathing and feeling energetic with groove.

Did you and Jay Caruso face any creative differences during production, and how did you resolve them?

Not at all. All of our references and opinions on the track were very aligned.

What would you say ‘The Sound of Music’ represents in terms of your artistic evolution, and how does it reflect where you are musically right now?

I love it so much because the track honours the classic elements of Funk and Disco while moving the sound into the future. That’s what I’ve always aimed to do with my music. I think it’s a great representation of what I do and where I want to go. Jay and I have many more singles planned together.

Can you share what you have coming up next? Do you have any more collaborations or releases planned?

Yes! Jay and I are working on several more singles in a similar style. I’m also excited to collaborate with the DJ/Production duo, Atari Safari. Plus, I’ll soon be releasing an album of all the singles I’ve created on my TikTok LIVE livestreams. I stream there six nights a week (9 pm and 11 pm EST) at https://www.tiktok.com/@freekbass
