In this interview, we sat down with Semark to dive deeper into his creative process, inspirations, and career in the world of Electronic music.
Can you describe your musical style and influences in just one sentence?
I’ll try! Energetic, uplifting Dance music with a hint of nostalgia.
Is there something you do every morning that sets the tone for your day?
Yes, drink a super strong coffee!
When you’re preparing a live set, what’s typically playing in the background to get you inspired?
Usually when I’m looking for new music to play, I’ll have the TV on very quietly in the background to be honest.
Which international music forums or communities do you regularly participate in for new ideas and trends?
I’m always excited to hear new styles and trends but I don’t really participate in any official forums. I just keep my ear to the ground and pay attention to what’s trending on social media etc.
How would you describe your personal style, both in your music and in your daily life?
Hmm. Minimalistic? I try to keep it simple in all aspects of my life and in my music, but always aim for the highest quality result.
Can you recall the moment when you realised you wanted to pursue a career in electronic music?
Yes, I think I was only about 8 years old when I started learning how to beatmatch and became obsessed with becoming a DJ.
Looking back on your childhood, what kind of kid were you, and how do you see those features reflected in your work today?
I was actually pretty quiet as a kid. I would prefer to stay in and do music than go out and play football for example. I think the early days of learning to play the piano has helped me in terms of writing melodies etc in my work today.
Who are your favourite DJs, and what about their style and music resonates with you?
I used to go to a lot of Drum & Bass raves… I remember being at one in London and just thinking “who is this DJ they are amazing” and when I looked it was Danny Byrd. His energy was next level and he was clearly just enjoying it so much. I’ve also loved hearing MJ Cole, DJ EZ and Hannah Wants play. I guess they all have a bass-heavy, UK sound which I really connect with.
What are some must-have gadgets or tools for your live performances?
Keeping it simple here too, just CDJs and a mixer is good with me. Maybe my laptop if it’s a long set.
If you could revive any music trend from the past, which one would it be and why?
Trance vibes, but that’s kind of happening right now anyway!
Who or what inspires you the most in your creative endeavours?
Sometimes I just feel the need to make music! The weather can inspire me, especially during the spring.
Are there any specific challenges or obstacles that motivate you to push yourself further in your career?
I am motivated by my love of dance music, and would just like to share my own tracks with the world.
Do you have a musical guilty pleasure, if so, what is it?
Many, thankfully you’ve only asked for one. Vengaboys.
If you could host a DJ set with any three artists, living or deceased, who would they be and why?
Tough one. Fatboy Slim, Sub Focus, and Carl Cox. I think that would be an interesting blend.
Lastly, what’s your favourite club or festival to perform at, and what memories or emotions does it evoke for you?
Ministry of Sound. I played there a while back, just in the baby box. The sound system in the main room is incredible and the club was purpose-built for Dance music. I had a great time playing there and have also enjoyed attending raves there too. Overall, memories of happiness!
