At 23, Mats van Biljouw has already experienced the kind of career acceleration many artists spend years working towards. Under the name KLOFAMA, the DJ and producer has gone from creating tracks in his bedroom in Horst, Limburg, to performing for thousands of people at major electronic music events across Europe.
Now, his story is being captured in I AM: KLOFAMA, a short documentary by production company CULT. Directed by Sten Hoeijmakers of CULT. Productions, the film follows Van Biljouw through the year in which his personal and professional life begins moving at an unprecedented pace.
Three years ago, KLOFAMA was still a project shared mainly among friends. Today, Mats is travelling between airports, hotel rooms, backstage areas and festival stages, performing at platforms including Blackworks, Verknipt, Rotterdam Rave and Teletech. He has also played at the Johan Cruijff ArenA, one of the Netherlands’ most recognisable venues.
Yet I AM: KLOFAMA is not simply a story of success, big stages and sold-out crowds. At its centre is a more personal question: who is Mats van Biljouw when he is no longer KLOFAMA?

From Horst to the international circuit
The documentary moves between two contrasting worlds. One is the high-intensity environment surrounding KLOFAMA: constant travel, large audiences, high expectations and the pressure to perform night after night. The other is Horst, the Limburg town where Mats grew up and where he continues to return to his family, friends and familiar surroundings.
On stage, KLOFAMA is part of a hardtechno scene defined by speed, energy and spectacle. The artist name has become increasingly recognisable among a new generation of electronic music fans, while his performances continue to draw larger audiences in the Netherlands and abroad.
Away from the stage, however, the documentary finds Mats in quieter settings. At the kitchen table, in his car, around friends who knew him before the growing crowds and international bookings, the artist persona gives way to a more intimate portrait of the person behind it.
These moments reveal the tension between rapid public success and private reality. While audiences know KLOFAMA as a performer, Mats is still navigating the changes that come with becoming visible to thousands of people at a young age.

When identity cannot keep up
The central theme of I AM: KLOFAMA is not just ambition, but identity. What happens when the public version of you grows faster than your ability to understand your own life? How do you stay grounded when your name, image and music begin to travel further than you ever imagined?
For Van Biljouw, these questions are closely connected to the pace of his breakthrough. In only a few years, he has developed from a local bedroom producer into an internationally performing artist. His all-night-long shows in the Netherlands and abroad have sold out multiple times, showing that KLOFAMA is no longer simply an emerging name, but an artist capable of independently bringing together large audiences.
The documentary explores the pressure behind that growth. Constant travel, expectations from fans, the demand to keep developing creatively and the isolation that can come with life on the road all form part of the reality behind a rapidly expanding career.
It is in the conversations with family and longtime friends that another side of the story appears. Doubt, loneliness, relief and uncertainty are given space alongside the excitement of success. Rather than reducing the journey to a conventional rise-to-fame narrative, I AM: KLOFAMA examines what that rise asks of a person.
A reflection of a changing music industry
KLOFAMA’s trajectory also says something about the wider transformation of the music industry. For previous generations, building an international audience often required years of gradual development through local clubs, labels and scene networks. Today, a distinctive musical identity and a strong digital presence can take an artist from a bedroom studio to a global audience in a remarkably short time.
Hardtechno, in particular, has become one of the fastest-growing forces in electronic music culture. Social media has expanded the visibility of DJs, events and new sounds, while audiences are discovering artists outside traditional local scenes. KLOFAMA’s rise reflects that shift: a young artist from Limburg reaching audiences far beyond the place where his story began.
By following Mats both on the road and at home, I AM: KLOFAMA aims to offer more than a behind-the-scenes look at an emerging DJ. It presents the human reality behind momentum—the effort required to stay connected to yourself when everything around you is speeding up.
I AM: KLOFAMA is currently in production and is expected to premiere in mid-2027.
